In 1882 Charles Lyell and his friend Rodrick Merchison began an extensive geological tour through France and Italy. While Merchison had to head back to England, Lyell continued onto Sicily and by January 1829, he landed in Naples. It was in the bay of Naples near the waters edges at Pozzuoli that Lyell saw the ruins of The Roman Temple of Jupiter Serapis. Only three of the columns remained, but it was the markings half way up them that produced a moment of revelation in Lyell.
Trained as a lawyer, Lyell became the correspondent for the geological society of London and his function was to network with the French and the German geological society's. He understood that there were twenty-one layers of sedimentary rock beneath the streets of Paris. From the data gathered by Lyell, it became clear to everyone that the order of strata beneath the streets of Paris were closely similar to the order of strata beneath the United Kingdom. Since then several specific strata have been traced as several continuous extending virtually around the entire earth.
Lyell was a christian and had trouble accepting the biblical miracles. The Genesis Flood was too great a belief for him to handle. Lyells world view of enormous catastrophes in earths history were virtually a threat to his belief system.
Charles Lyell issued his Pricipals of Geology in three volumes over a period of three years. To ensure reaching younger minds of doctrine uniformitaranism , he wrote a text book based upon his principals of geology and entitled it The Elements of Geology.
