Alfred Wegener
Alfred Wegener
Alfred Wegener was born November 1, 1880. Alfred lived in Berlin Germany and was the youngest of five children. He attended school at Kollnische Gymnasium and graduated best in his class. Alfred did a lot of his studying in meteorology and climatology. In 1912 Alfred advanced the theory of continental drift, the lateral movement of continents resulting from the motion of crustal plates. This was a very controversial hypothesis which was not widely accepted until the 1950's. He saw that the continents on our earth could fit together like a jigsaw. Also he found that there were similarities between different continents such as similar fossils, species of animals and vegetation.
Wegener's theory connects to the theory of evolution because of the movement of continents. as the continents moved into new climates the organisms had to adapt to the environment. Animals had changed features over time to help them survive more in the time period. As the continents changed, the organisms kept evolving and gave us what we have today. Therefore Darwin's theory and Wegener's theory fitt well together.
